Kicking Topics :: Good Drill, Bad Drill

Mike Herman:Sun Jul 25, 2010 4:33 pm (GMT 5)
With another training camp season about to begin (or having already begun for some), we asked kicking consultants the following two part question:
The good: Over the course of your kicking career, what exercise/drill did/do you find to be most beneficial?
The bad: Which exercise/drill still has you scratching your head as to why you had to do it?

Not sure if this got out to all players interested but I have Cowboy Stadium set up for Kicking, Punting, Long Snapping and Tours Aug. 1.

There will be 2 groups - Prep and JC guys then College and Beyond.

I think presents an interesting opportunity for players of all levels to compete, rank and unique experience that will be very positive. I hope to offer a Pro Tryout soon for Seniors that came out this year and Recruiting Ranking event over break as well.

Registration is available through Kicking.com immediately.
If I can answer questions send me an email to kickdoctor@gmail.com my phone is blowing up like crazy so might be better to text and I can call you back. 209.595.4277

Best of luck this year.

You can use shoe dye. Go to an old fashion shoe repair shop (use to called a Cobbler) and they should have it. Comes in a small spray can just like modeling paint. Can also find online. It works great. Back in the 80's, I use to get white dye and completely color my Copa's white. Will last through use in wet conditions as well.
Make a video as already suggested is the first step

Then figure out where you'd like to play. Look at the websites and see what they have in regards to punter and what year their starter is. Doing so will help you target schools that most likely will be looking to bring another punter on.

Good luck
soharasohara:Sun May 30, 2010 8:46 pm (GMT 5)
Hello kickers,

I recently put this tape together and send it out to many division 1 colleges across the nation. I'm hoping to land a spot on a team for football this fall.

A little bit about me:

- Played soccer from 5 - 17 (Played for the State of Kansas (ODP) for two years)
- Never have I ever played organized football in my life
- I've been bodybuilding/Lifting seriously for the past three years
- I have been kicking footballs for less than a year of my life
- I have a twin brother who kicks for the Oklahoma Sooners ( Patrick O'Hara) --- He made a video last year and sent it all over and got picked up by OU. I'm following his footsteps for now.

Please check out my video. I have several questions for those of you who can answer my questions.

I can't post links so Search my name on YOOO U TUBE "Steven O'Hara"
- What do I need to improve on?
- How can I make my chances greater of getting picked up this fall?
- I'm thinking a kicking camp would be a great idea this summer so I can work with a snapper and holder. Any recommendations?

THANKS FOR YOUR TIME,

Steven O'Hara!

Punting Topics :: RE: Question regarding spiral kicks

kickboy:Fri May 14, 2010 6:04 pm (GMT 5)
Having a hard time turning it over - here's some thoughts:

1. Make sure you are locikng your ankle out/pointing your toe. A loose ankle is like being hit by a punch with a loose fist but if you're hit with a clinched fist it hurts a lot more. Same premise with punting a loose ankle (one that is not locked out) doesn't allow good contact with the ball. Lock your ankle/Point your toe - make a firm contact surface for the ball to explode off of.

2. Check the nose of the ball (front point) - it should be level when it is dropped to slightly down. If the nose is upward tilted you have a much harder time turning it over (that's why on pooch punts you typically tilt the nose upward so that the ball does not turn over - if the returner doesn't catch the ball when it drops the tail of the ball falls first thus when it hits the ground it typically bounces backwards whereas if it turns over the nose of the ball hits firsts and it typically bounces forward).

3. Check the angle on the ball. Asides from the nose being level to slightly down you want an angle on the ball. Use the nose of the ball as the hour hand on a clock to visualize your angle - 12:00 would mean that the ball is straight. For a RT footed punter you want to move counterclockwise and typically the angle on the ball is between 10:00 and 11:00.
This increases the surface area of the underside of the ball thus increasing the sweet spot.

Hope this helps - Good Luck!

Why cant you wear soccer cleats to play safety? School rule or something?

If you cant go with soccer, check out the Nike Speed TD. It's a position player shoe but you can still kick in it, just make sure you get a size that is really snug on your foot and you will want to grind down the spikes on the kicking toe a bit just so they dont drag the ground when you kick.
